Summer in San Antonio can be hard. It’s usually over 100 degrees every day. And with 3 kids and no school … we get cabin fever easily! But this summer we wanted to make the most of no school and fill our days with tons of activities!
We got SeaWorld passes, bought a pool, and ventured out to places we’ve never been before around town! It was such a great summer with the kids. Watching them each grow, and see their personalities changing. My oldest having special needs can be challenging when planning family outings but this summer has to have been the best for him participating in the fun!
We explored downtown including the Alamo, The Riverwalk, Hemisfair park (and splashpad!) took a riverboat tour and lunch at our favorite German Biergarten restaurant (still kid friendly!)
He LOVES anything water related so Seaworld and pools were high frequency! He also started playing more with his sisters .. or I should say tolerating their wild antics better! LOL! He’s 5 years older than his sister and I think he certainly gets that big brother attitude when he just can’t handle his little sisters running wild. Overall though we had the most fun at the Doseum (San Antonio’s newest childrens museum). Everything was very accessible for him, and he could explore out of his wheelchair as well!
We also had friends over from England for 2 weeks! We all had so much fun going to the coast and exploring around town. Our favorite had to be going to the coast at Rockport beach! It is the perfect beach for kids. The water is so warm and the sand bar goes way far out in to the bay so its only maybe 2 foot deep for quite a while. None of my kids can really swim well but we felt comfortable with them going pretty far out with us in the water. They also have nice bathrooms, playgrounds and picnic tables and BBQ’s available. It’s also 30 min away from Corpus Christi and Port Aransas which get way more crowded so even on its busiest days it doesnt feel overcrowded!
Bandera, Texas was also a fun day trip. Bandera is considered ‘The Cowboy capitol of the world’. You can stay at a variety of Dude Ranches or just walk around town exploring. On the weekends they have cowboys on horses doing rodeo tricks too. We went to the Frontier Museum which is a small house turned museum that has a ton of frontier tools and items, and a variety of eclectic collections from that time. They have a scavenger hunt for the kids to do as you walk around and when your finished you get to pick a prize! My kids loved it! Out back the museum had a little stage with dress up clothes and a bin to dig for fossils and checkers of course. We also had lunch at a fun restaurant called O.S.T. restaurant which has a salad bar in a wagon and saddles to sit in at the counter, you can also eat in the John Wayne room which is decorated in honor of the Actor best known for his western films. Last we stopped in the shops and got authentic cowboy hats for everyone and of course Lasso’s for the kids!
Overall our staycation summer was a success with lots of memories made and we didn’t even leave the area!
